New Delhi: In the wake of the pandemic, on October 7 the central government issued a draft notification requesting comments and suggestions to amend the 1989 Central Motor Vehicle Rules to facilitate the issuance of the International Driving Permit (IDP) for citizens whose IDP has expired while they are abroad.

“It has been noted that in certain cases for citizens who travel abroad and in a foreign country, the International Driving Permit expires and there is no mechanism for its renewal abroad. The proposal is to modify the CMVR 1989 to facilitate Citizens can apply through the Indian Embassy / Mission Abroad portals and applications would then be moved to VAHAN for consideration by the respective RTOs, “the Ministry of Road and Highway Transport said in a statement on Saturday. official.

In addition, the proposal also includes the elimination of the conditions of a medical certificate and a valid visa at the time of making the application for internally displaced persons in the country, since the citizen who has a valid driver’s license should not be a requirement for other medical certificate. Also, there are certain countries where the visa is on arrival and in such cases the visa was not available when applying for the IDP in India before the trip.

Meanwhile, the validity of driving licenses and documents of expired motor vehicles in the country was extended until December 31.

MoRTH said the decision was made due to existing conditions in the country to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
