HATHRAS / UP: Before dawn and in inexplicable haste, the 19-year-old Dalit girl, who had died in Delhi Safdarjung Hospital On Tuesday 15 days after being tortured and allegedly gang-raped by four upper caste men in her village, she was cremated by policeman at 2.40 am on Wednesday. Her relatives said they never gave their consent; police and administration said they did.

The UP CM spoke to the family, promising them 25 lakh rupees in compensation, a government job for a family member as a school teacher, a house, and that the trial would take place in fast-track court.

When the family found out, they said, they rushed to find a burning pyre in the middle of the fields. Outrage over what was seen as a continuing horror story led the opposition to demand the CM’s resignation. Just outside the village, in the town of Hathras, police charged Dalit protesters with latex for allegedly throwing stones and lowering shop blinds.
