The chairman of the Karnataka legislative council was abused and dragged from his chair in unprecedented scenes today in a one-day session.

In a video, council members are seen surrounding the president and vice president Bhojegowda of Janata Dal Secular forcing him to rise from his seat.

It was always going to be a tense session, with the BJP wanting to remove the president of the Council, and Congress resisting that demand.

The Legislative Council was convened five days after its indefinite suspension.

The winter session of the Karnataka legislature was originally scheduled for December 7-15. However, it was interrupted.

The ruling BJP wanted a vote of no confidence against the council president, K Prathapachandra Shetty, who had adjourned earlier than planned.

Karnataka’s 2020 Cow Slaughter Prevention and Livestock Preservation Bill is pending before the council.

The combined number of members of Congress and JDS on the council is more than the ruling BJP. The opposition parties have made it clear that they will not support the government in legislation.

Congress, which had boycotted the last day of the assembly session on the presentation of the Cow Protection Bill, will attend the council session.
