In a video posted by the Indian Navy, an old decommissioned Godavari-class guided missile frigate has been sunk by an anti-ship missile fired by INS Prabal, a corvette.
According to the navy, “ the missile was aimed with deadly precision at maximum range, sinking the target ship. ” The Prabal is armed with 16 Russian-made KH-35 ‘Uran’ anti-ship missiles, which are believed to have a maximum range. of approximately 130 kilometers.
The Godavari class frigates made in India of the Indian Navy, one of which sank today, were first ordered from the Indian Navy in 1983. The frigates of this class, three of which were Built, they had a significant indigenous warship design and a combination of Indian, Russian and Western weapons systems.
Two ships in the class, the leading frigate, Godavari and the second in the class, Ganga, were decommissioned in 2015 and 2018 respectively. One of these two ships is believed to have sunk in these exercises.
On Thursday, the chief of the navy, Admiral Karambir Singh, reviewed the operational readiness and combat readiness of the Indian Navy’s primary combatants, several of whom are now deployed in naval exercises. This includes the INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier and its battle group which includes destroyers, frigates and other warships. INS Chennai, one of the Navy’s most advanced destroyers, has also tested a BrahMos anti-ship missile during these exercises.
The navy also installed a new anti-submarine corvette, INS Kavaratti, yesterday at the Visakhapatnam naval shipyard. The Kavaratti is the last of four indigenous anti-submarine corvettes of this class built for the Indian Navy. The navy says the Kavaratti “can rightfully be regarded as one of the most powerful anti-submarine warships ever built in India.”
