More than 75% of the beds intended for Covid-19 patients in the capital of the 10 private hospitals are busy, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Monday.
This is in stark contrast to the public hospitals, where only a little more than 38% of these designated beds are occupied.
Of the 677 beds for Covid patients in private hospitals, 509 were busy on Monday, Kejriwal said. In public hospitals, 1,478 of 3,829 beds were occupied, he said.
“We issued an order on Sunday calling for 117 nursing homes/private hospitals to allocate 20% of beds for the treatment of Covid-19 patients,” the prime minister said. This was expected to add 2,000 beds in private establishments.
“At present, we have 4,500 beds in private and government hospitals in Delhi and around 2,500 are still available for patients,” he said.
Until Monday afternoon, the capital had reported 14,053 cases of infection by the coronavirus, and 276 deaths. There were 7,006 active cases in the city, while 6,771 people had recovered.
“Of the total of 3,829 beds in public hospitals, 3,164 have the help of oxygen. We are focusing more on oxygen beds as severe the patients have respiratory problems and it is important to keep the levels of oxygen. We have 250 fans in the public hospitals, of which only 11 are being used as of now. There are 72 fans in private hospitals and 15 are occupied, the CM said.
The Delhi government is also preparing to GTB hospital for the treatment of Covid-19 patients. A total of 1,500 beds with the help of oxygen, is being prepared in the hospital, Kejriwal said.
“The situation is under control and there is no reason to worry. The cases are expected to increase with relaxation in the running of the bulls. We need to worry about whether the recovery rate is going down and more people are succumbing to the disease. But in Delhi, the number of active cases is equal to the number of people who have recovered.
“In the second place, we have to look at the health infrastructure and monitoring the increase in the number of severe cases. Cases should not turn seriously and come to a situation in which our hospital system collapse,” he said.
The CM also warned the hospitals of serious action if they departed Covid-19 patients.
Citing the example of a private hospital, which refused to a patient with breathing problems and does not help in the organization of a bed after being given positive, Kejriwal said: “The hospital did not even arrange for an ambulance for the patients who were positive in the test. The patient was left on his own. We have issued a cause notice to the hospital. It is the responsibility of the hospital to provide an ambulance and make sure that the patient is admitted to a Covid-designated hospital,” he said.
