Back in the familiar surroundings of the television newsroom after a week in judicial custody, journalist Arnab Goswami attacked Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday for arresting him in a “bogus” case.
“Uddhav Thackeray, listen to me. You lost. You have been defeated, ”said Goswami (47), while surrounded by visibly relieved colleagues from his Republic television channel.
Shortly after his release from Taloja jail near Mumbai at around 8:30 p.m., Goswami made his way to the channel’s Lower Parel studio, of which he is editor-in-chief.
Goswami also singled out Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh for his “ illegal ” arrest on November 4 in a 2018 suicide complicity case.
Goswami said that while he was in the Taloja jail since November 8, he was subjected to three rounds of police questioning.
“Uddhav Thackeray, he arrested me in an old, bogus case and he didn’t even apologize,” said Goswami, who was seen with a stubble.
“The game has just begun,” he said and announced that he will launch the Republic TV channel in all languages and will also have a presence in international media.
Goswami said that he had been arrested again and said: “I will launch (the channels) even from inside the jail and you (Thackeray) will not be able to do anything.” Thanking the Supreme Court for granting him provisional bail, Goswami spoke a few words in Marathi, ending with the slogan “Jai Maharashtra”.
Goswami was released on Wednesday night, hours after the Supreme Court granted a provisional bail on the grounds that it would be a “parody of justice” if personal freedom was restricted.
