The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday forecast widespread to extremely heavy rains for the next two to three days off the coast of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Yanam, Rayalaseema and Telangana. The department said the low-pressure area over the northeast of the Bay of Bengal and the neighborhood with the associated cyclonic circulation that extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level slopes to the southwest. He said it is very likely to move west-northwest for the next 2-3 days and become more marked in the northwest of the Bay of Bengal and the neighborhood over the next 24 hours.
Under the influence of this low pressure area, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rains is likely to occur over Odisha on September 20 and 21. September. The IMD further said that due to the convergence of strong wet winds at the lower tropospheric levels of the Bay of Bengal, widespread rains with heavy to very heavy rainfall are likely to also occur in the sub-Himalayan states of West Bengal and northeast during September 21-23. He said extremely heavy isolated rains are likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya from September 21-22 and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Monday.
Over the next 24 hours, the department has forecast thunderstorms (speed 50-60 kmph) accompanied by lightning in isolated locations over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and thunderstorms with lightning and hail in isolated locations over Uttarakhand. “Moderate thunderstorms with lightning are very likely in isolated locations over Bihar, inland Maharashtra, southeastern Rajasthan and western Madhya Pradesh for the next 12 hours,” IMD said.
