The Meteorological Department of India (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’, which is used by a severe heat wave, for the parts of Delhi for Monday and Tuesday, with the day temperature likely to touch 46 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
With the sweltering heat gripped the national capital Sunday with the maximum temperature hovering near 45 degrees Celsius in most parts of the city.
“Heat wave will prevail in many places and severe heat wave in isolated places. Mainly clear skies with strong surface winds (20-20 kilometers per hour),” the IMD forecast said.
The Safdarjung Observatory, which provides representative values of the city, recorded an increase of 44.4 degrees Celsius, which was five notches above normal, on Sunday. The minimum temperature was recorded at 28.7 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal.
Weather stations in Palam, Lodhi Road and Ayanagar registered trademarks of their respective maximum at 45.4 degrees Celsius, 44.2 Celsius degrees and 45.6 degrees Celsius.
Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the regional forecasting centre at the IMD, said that some respite from the sweltering heat is expected in the national capital, on the 28th of May due to a fresh Western Disturbance and easterly winds in the lower levels. “The dust of the storm and electrical storm with winds, with gusts of up to 60 kilometers per hour, it is likely that more of Delhi-NCR on May 29 and 30,” he said.
In addition to Delhi, the IMD has issued a “red alert” in the Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Rajasthan for the next two days. Has been issued “orange” alert for the east of Uttar Pradesh.
