IIT to provide one more opportunity for JEE-Advanced dropouts amid COVID-19

New Delhi: Students who successfully enrolled but were unable to sit for the Joint Entrance Exam – Advanced (JEE-Advanced) due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic will have one more opportunity to sit the exam in 2021, Institutes of Technology of India (IIT)) said in a joint note on Tuesday

“To address the concerns of affected candidates, while avoiding biases about other candidates… it was decided to allow all candidates who had successfully registered to appear in JEE Advanced, but who were absent in the exam to appear in JEE Advanced 2021 as one – Important time to ensure equal opportunities for all, ”said IIT Delhi after a meeting of the IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB).

IIT Delhi is this year’s organizing IIT and JAB is the lead body of IIT dealing with policies, rules and regulations related to admissions and selections at IIT.

This comes days after the National Testing Agency (NTA) agreed to retest for candidates who were unable to take the NEET exam in September due to Covid-19. However, the authorities have yet to announce a new exam for those who were unable to sit for JEE Mains, which forms the basis for selecting students to take JEE Advanced. Almost a quarter of the candidates for the JEE main exam had dropped out of the exam scheduled for the first half of September.

IIT Delhi said that initially the JAB thought of giving an additional opportunity to students who could not take the entrance exam because they were covid-positive, but subsequently decided to hit for equal opportunities for all absent candidates this year.

The IITs have also “decided that these candidates will not have to qualify for JEE Main 2021, and will be allowed to appear directly in JEE Advanced 2021 based on their successful registration to appear” in 2020.

This relaxation of the existing eligibility criteria will be in addition to the proportional relaxation of the age criteria and in 2021 these absent candidates will be considered “in addition and not as part of the total number of candidates who would qualify from JEE Main 2021 to appear in JEE Advanced 2021 “.
