IIT Madras has closed its departments, centers, laboratories and the library citing an increase in coronavirus cases in shelters, according to an email to students accessed by NDTV.
Sixty-six students, sources say, tested positive for Covid this month and 700 more are being tested.
Teachers and students have been asked to work from home.
The main educational institution, in a statement, said that the shelters had only 10 percent of the usual residents and that all were evaluated after some reported positive.
Students who are still in shelters receive packaged meals, the IIT said.

Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said the students are in stable condition. “The students have been quarantined and are reported to be in stable condition. There is no need to panic. Such groups were expected after the lifting of the restriction in the state,” he said.
