NEW DELHI: A nasty comment made by the Kashmir Range Police Inspector General about the CRPF has sparked controversy among force personnel committed to counter-terrorism operations in the Valley.
The incident occurred on April 29 when DGP Dilbag Singh was visiting Baramulla and chaired an operational meeting with all SSPs and commanders in northern Kashmir.
The DGP was seeking comment from all officers on the operational situation.
During the discussion about the role of the CRPF in Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, IG Police Kashmir Range made the statement “unpleasant” saying that the CRPF was getting credit for operations although it was doing nothing.
Vijay Kumar’s comment, as the seniors were informed after the meeting in a letter, was “The performance of the CRPF is not up to par. Here, the intelligence is generated by the Jammu and Kashmir police and operations are carried out by the Army and the Rashtriya Rifles. ” The CRPF name is inserted like this. This I know. I’ve been to CRPF. “
CRPF officers present at the meeting did not react on the spot “to avoid public embarrassment”, however, after the meeting they met IG and objected to the unpleasant remark about the force.
Officers have also reported this to senior officers in their chain of command.
This controversy is not fading, and senior police officials see it as damage to the smooth coordination between sister forces.
Sources reported that CRPF has sought intervention at the top level.
Chairing a joint meeting of senior police, Army, CRPF, SSB and ITBP officers convened to review measures taken by Srinagar’s safety net, the head of state police Dilbag Singh said: “The role of the CAPF officers and the Jawans who are deployed in the various encomiendas on the territory of the Union of Jammu and Kashmir are commendable and laudable. The CAPFs have played an important role in both maintaining law and order as in counterinsurgency operations. “
Vijay Kumar is from the 1997 group of the Indian Police Service and has long served with the CRPF in various positions, including DIG New Delhi Range, IG COBRA and IG Head Quarters.
Central Armed Police Force with a force of 3.5 lakh of which around 60,000 soldiers are deployed in Jammu and Kashmir performing a variety of internal security tasks, including opening roads, counter-terrorism operations, static guarding and tasks of law and order.
CRPF bagged up to 72 gallantry medals, the highest of all police forces awarded on the eve of Independence Day 2019, which included one Kirti Chakra and the two Shaurya Chakras awarded for bravery.
On the occasion of Republic Day 2020, the CRPF obtained 76 gallantry medals, second only to the Jammu and Kashmir police honored with 108 medals, followed by the CRPF 76.
