In his latest opinion piece at The Indian Express, Sidharth Nath Singh, who is a cabinet minister in the Uttar Pradesh government, has explained why the opposition is wrong to attack the UP government for crimes, especially those against women.
“The safety of women has been the top priority of the Uttar Pradesh government since Yogi Adityanath took office as chief minister in 2017. The UP government, under his supervision, has not only taken appropriate measures to protect women. women of all kinds of crimes but has also guaranteed strict punishment for perpetrators so that potential offenders can redress themselves. This approach paid off and ensured that UP led the way in controlling rape and other heinous crimes against women. ” he writes.
According to the report of the National Office of Criminal Records in 2019, the rate of rape cases in UP was 2.8 per lakh, while in 2016 and 2017 the rate was 4.6 to 4.0. In 2019, UP was ranked 26th out of a total of 36 states and territories in the union in rape cases.

“These data are a vindication of the fact that UP is ahead of other states in terms of control of rape cases”, he affirms.
In the “Crime in India 2018 and 2019” figures released by the NCRB, UP ranks far behind several other states in terms of recorded crime cases.
“In other words, it is ahead of many states in terms of crime control. The percentage of crimes registered in UP is 10.92 while the percentage of its population in the country is 16.85 ”. he affirms.

“CM Adityanath’s ‘zero tolerance’ towards crime is paying off”, he writes. This can be measured by the fact that according to the crime rate per lakh of population, the national average is 58.8, while the average UP is below 55.7, with Assam being the highest with 166. States like Rajasthan , Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh are also above the national average.
He concludes stating: “Having spent many years in public life, I find no parallel to the acts of irresponsibility to which the Opposition resorted in the Hathras incident. In addition to its attempt to provoke communal outbreaks and caste riots, the irresponsible approach shown by the Opposition is deplorable ”.
