ICC Test Ratings | Virat Kohli is approaching Smith’s number one spot; Bumrah falls out of the Top 10

On the back of an impressive 74 in Adelaide, Virat Kohli has closed in on Steve Smith at the top of the ICC test hitters rankings, with him now just 13 points behind the Australian. Bumrah and Rahane, however, came out of the Top 10 rankings for hitters and bowlers respectively.

Virat Kohli could have gone to India with a soulless look on his face, in the back of the horror show from his side on Saturday, but he has a reason to smile on a personal front as the Indian patron has closed the gap with Steve Smith at the top of the ICC hitters rankings with just 13 points. Kohli (888 points) recorded scores of 74 and 4 in the first test in Adelaide, while his counterpart Smith (901) only achieved 1 and 1 *. While Kohli will not have a chance to improve his score, a few more points from the Australian could see the Indian skipper regain the top spot in the standings.

But while Kohli got good news, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, and Jasprit Bumrah fell down the rankings in their respective stronghold areas. While Pujara and Rahane, who failed to score for half a century in Adelaide, fell to eighth and eleventh in the batters ranking respectively, Bumrah, who claimed just 2 wickets in the entire match, came out of the Top 10 in the bowling rankings . . However, there was an increase in qualification for Ravichandran Ashwin, who starred in Adelaide, choosing 5 wickets in the match. Ashwin (777) climbed to ninth place in the bowlers’ standings, now just 4 behind Jimmy Anderson (781) in eighth place.

Pat Cummins retained the top spot in the bowlers’ rankings, with 910 rating points to his name, while his partner Josh Hazlewood, who was the architect of the Adelaide Abomination on Saturday, joined him in the Top 5. Cummins, however, is a long way from second-placed Stuart Broad, who is 65 rating points behind the Australian.
