I want to win the World Cups, they are the pinnacle of world cricket: Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma might not have achieved World Cup glory despite having a dream career in England last year, but the Indian vice-captain is not going to give up on his dreams.

Speaking on India Today E-Conclave Corona Series, Rohit Sharma said winning the World Cup is something he and his teammates have dreamed of together and he is confident that India will be able to win a world title in the near future.

Rohit Sharma topped the batting charts at the 2019 World Cup with 648 runs over 9 games, which included a record 5-hundred in England. However, the Indian campaign came to an end in the semi-final in which they were overtaken by New Zealand.

Having won ICC titles at the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy, Rohit said he hopes to add to his eye-studded trophy cabinet at the upcoming T20 World Cup.

“Winning the World Cup is a dream for all of us, together. I want to win the worlds. Of course, every time you go out, you want to win every game. But the World Cup is something you know is the pinnacle of everything. I want to win the World Cups, “said Rohit.

There is uncertainty about the 2020 T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in Australia in October-November due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The new coronavirus outbreak has had a massive impact on the world sports calendar with some of the biggest tournaments, including the Tokyo Olympics, having been postponed.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to discuss the fate of the T20 World Cup at Thursday’s Committee of Chief Executives (CEC) meeting, given the travel restrictions that have been imposed on Australia.

However, Rohit Sharma is confident that cricket tables across the country will provide teams with enough time to prepare for the T20 World Cup after the sport returns.

“I hope we have enough time to prepare for the World Cup”

The Indian vice captain, who missed the last half of India’s tour of New Zealand earlier this year with a calf injury, said he will work to regain his fitness once the Covid-19 crisis subsides.

“We really are not sure when this World Cup (T20 World Cup) will happen. As it happens, we will have a good amount of time to prepare. Cricket tables around the world are not going to say “everything is fine, we will schedule the World Cup”. Of course, preparation time will be given for all countries because all countries are under closure. No one is playing, no one is training. Limited things at home are not enough, ”said Rohit.

“You need to go out and start training and get into the routine and strengthen your muscles. Especially for me, I got hurt before closing and I need to start working hard. I was just around the corner to do my fitness test. The first thing for me would be to pass the fitness test and hit some balls.

“The last ball I played was on February 2. That was when I got injured. I am looking forward to going out and playing and doing what I like best.”
