Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar clarified his position on Friday after Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma posted on Instagram, taking offense at what Gavaskar had said during comments regarding her husband Virat Kohli’s performance at the IPL game 2020 with Kings XI Punjab. Gavaskar said he did not blame the actress and wife of Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma, for the failure of the India captain, nor had he made sexist comments during the match and his comments were being misinterpreted. Kohli had a poor start on Thursday when he led the Royal Challengers Bangalore against Kings XI Punjab, leaving two easy catches and scoring just one run in five deliveries as RCB trailed by 97 runs.
In a chat with India Today, Gavaskar cleared the air about the controversy surrounding his comments about Kohli’s performance during an IPL league match between RCB and KXIP.
“I’d like to say it again. Where do I blame her? I don’t blame her. I’m just saying that the video said she was bowling for Virat. Virat only played that bowling alley during the lockout period. It’s a tennis ball, a fun game where people have to hang out during the lockdown. That’s all. Where do I blame her for Virat’s failures?
“The point I’m trying to make is that there was no practice for anyone, including Virat in the confinement. I’m not being sexist. If someone has played it, what can I do?”
While Kohli was hitting, Gavaskar made a comment about his performance.
Previously, many videos of Sunil Gavaskar’s comment during the match had been circulating on social media. “Ab jo lockdown tha toh, sirf Anushka ke bowling ki practice ki unhone, voh video dekhiye. Usse toh kuch nahi banna hai (He only practiced against Anushka bowling during the lockdown. Watch the video. That won’t help)” is heard saying during the comment.
Anushka Sharma objected to this.

“That, Mr. Gavaskar, your message is disgusting is a fact, but I would love for you to explain to me why you thought of making such a radical statement about a wife who accuses her of her husband’s gambling. I am sure that throughout the years he has respected it. the private life of every cricketer while commenting on the game. Don’t you think you should have the same respect for me and us? I’m sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to comment about me Is my husband’s performance from last night or his words only relevant if he uses my name in the process? It’s 2020 and things still haven’t changed for me. When will I stop being drawn to cricket and stop being used to make radical statements? Mr. Gavaskar, you are a legend whose name stands out in this gentlemen’s game. I just wanted to tell you what I felt when I heard you say this, “Anushka Sharma posted on Instagram stories.
