According to the former captain, trying to play short bowling against him could work in Australia’s favor.
“If teams are trying to get me out like this, it’s probably a huge benefit to the team because it takes a lot out of people’s bodies if it continually falls short,” Smith told News Corp.
“I’ve faced a lot of short bowling in my life and haven’t had too many stresses. I guess we’ll just wait and see.”
Against New Zealand in the 2019-2020 season, Smith was fired for pacemaker with his left arm Neil Wagner four times as the Kiwi constantly attacked the batter with short pitches aimed at his body.
Smith, however, managed to average nearly 43 in all three games and exhausted the bowlers with his tenacious focus in the middle, helping the others rack up runs.
“It’s not a drama for me. I just play and summarize the conditions, how they’re trying to get me out and be able to counter that,” Smith said.
He acknowledged that Wagner executed it well, but others may not be able to replicate that.
“I mean, a few different oppositions have tried it and it’s certainly been more difficult (to execute) the way Wagner did. He has an amazing skill set where his speed goes up and down … it’s all between your ribs and your head “.
