Lords of tennis Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer joined the ATP Players Council after a series of professionals resigned during Wimbledon 2019. Both decided to mutually return to the council and work for the tour. However, American tennis player Noah Rubin believes that it was not a smart decision for Federer and Nadal to return to the Players Council.
“Speaking of the player council movement, I’m not a big fan of him. I know those guys are working hard. But I’m not a big fan of having Nadal and Federer on the Players Council. There are many different ways to do it. ” Rubin told EssentiallySports in an exclusive interview.
Rubin feels that players ranked outside the Top-100, who really don’t have a “talk stage” should take board positions. Those players understand the flaws in the career path better than the higher ranked ones.
“You have a guy like Federer and Nadal, you don’t need to be a part of that.” Whatever they say, they already have the platform to speak. I think we need more guys out of the top 100. Or a guy like me or someone who really cares, to make an impact. Right now, we don’t feel like we have a voice as much as they do. Even though the same boys play Slams. So that has been difficult. “
