Lords of tennis Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer joined the ATP Players Council after a series of professionals resigned during Wimbledon 2019. Both decided to mutually return to the council and work for the tour. However, American tennis player Noah Rubin believes that it was not a smart decision for Federer and Nadal to return to the Players Council.
“Speaking of the player council movement, I’m not a big fan of him. I know those guys are working hard. But I’m not a big fan of having Nadal and Federer on the Players Council. There are many different ways to do it. ” Rubin told EssentiallySports in an exclusive interview.
Rubin feels that players ranked outside the Top-100, who really don’t have a “talk stage” should take board positions. Those players understand the flaws in the career path better than the higher ranked ones.
“You have a guy like Federer and Nadal, you don’t need to be a part of that.” Whatever they say, they already have the platform to speak. I think we need more guys out of the top 100. Or a guy like me or someone who really cares, to make an impact. Right now, we don’t feel like we have a voice as much as they do. Even though the same boys play Slams. So that has been difficult. “
“This is not the right place for you” – Noah Rubin on Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer
In addition to tennis and training sessions, the best players are busy with things beyond the courts. They really don’t have time to analyze the gaps in the course and the problems that persist with the players. Therefore, it is advisable not to assume such responsibilities.
“I don’t think so, Federer and Nadal are prepared for what it really takes to be a board member, communicate and open up to speak.” I know they are very busy, I get it. But then, don’t sign up for the job, maybe this isn’t the right place for you. “ World number 225 Noah Rubin continued to address his perspective.
He feels that if Swiss legend Federer tweets something, it would go viral and tennis bodies will consider this proposal. That’s the platform Roger has, and he doesn’t really have a need to join the ATP Players Council.
“Then you can do it on your own time. Federer can literally tweet something, it will be captured by the entire tennis community. So there really is no need, call the Players Council and anyone will pick up Federer. So that’s not a problem. I think taking one of the places is also a problem. ” Rubin concluded.
