Days after a torrential downpour flash floods triggered in Hyderabad and killed more than 50 people, heavy rains hit the city again on Saturday night, leaving various parts of the city flooded.
Hyderabad traffic police closed the Falaknuma Bridge to the public after part of the road collapsed due to heavy rain. Authorities said the road to Falaknuma from Enginebowli and the Mahbubnagar crossing was closed and asked travelers to take alternative routes. The old Kurnool road to the airport from the PVNR highway was also flooded. Cyberabad police asked travelers to use the outer ring road as an alternative. The flood water also wreaked havoc in parts of the old city, Chandrayangutta, Falaknuma and the surrounding areas. A six-year-old girl died in the Mangalhat area after the wall of the house where she slept collapsed.

Dramatic images of the city’s flooded streets hit social media. In one of the videos shared on Twitter, an automatic rickshaw was seen being towed away as locals tried to prevent vehicles from being towed away. In another video, a man can be seen swimming in rainwater after traffic stopped.

According to official data (from 8.30am to 10pm Saturday), the Singapore Township in Medchal Malkajgiri district received 157.3mm of rain, followed by 153mm of rain in Bandlaguda near Uppal in the city. Several other areas of the city also witnessed heavy rains.
“Alert: Flooding of the lower colonies Hafiz baba Nagar, Phoolbagh, Omar Colony, Indra Nagar, Shivaji Nagar, Rajiv Nagar. Cooperate with the police in evacuation exercises. ACP (Police Deputy Commissioner) Santoshnagar, ACP Falaknuma, Inspector of Chandrayangutta, Inspector of Madannapet and Inspector of Chatrinaka are present, ”tweeted Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar.
The Durgam Cheruvu Bridge is also open for commuters between Jubilee Hills and Hitech City and vice versa. “Visitors to the bridge are advised to avoid visiting the bridge this weekend,” tweeted the Cyberabad Traffic Police.
The Met’s office in its forecast for Sunday said that light to moderate rains or showers are very likely in some parts of the city, sometimes heavy episodes in one or two places in the city.

The state government said on October 15 that 50 people had lost their lives due to heavy rains and flash floods and the state government had put the losses, according to preliminary estimates, at more than 5 billion rupees. The state government has been implementing relief measures in the areas affected by the rain, even when some localities, close to bodies of water, remained in the water.
