GMR Hyderabad International Airport announced Tuesday the introduction of paperless electronic boarding facility for all international passengers traveling abroad from Hyderabad.
Pradeep Panicker, CEO of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), stated that this is an important milestone in the history of Indian aviation, he said that the electronic boarding solution for international operations was the first for any Indian airport.
He recalled that Hyderabad International Airport had the distinction of being the first and only airport in India to offer end-to-end paperless electronic boarding to all its domestic passengers on all flights. “In line with this, we have also launched this facility for international passengers,” he said.
The pilot project to provide electronic boarding solutions to international passengers was unveiled on IndiGo Airlines on October 2, when its Sharjah-bound passengers boarded from Hyderabad on flight 6E 1405.
“After the successful pilot of the project and all regulatory approvals, we have used our internal capabilities to adopt the electronic shipping solution for international operations,” said Panicker.
Based on a rigorous and successful pilot project, the government gave its go-ahead for Hyderabad International Airport to implement its electronic boarding services for international flights. “The service is currently available for select international IndiGo Airlines flights,” said an official statement from GMR.
Other scheduled international airlines operating out of Hyderabad are in the process of integrating with the airport’s electronic boarding system, which will be rolled out soon, the statement said.
As a process, any passenger boarding an international flight using the electronic boarding service will need to book the ticket online and do a web check-in. At the airport, the passenger must show the digital / printed boarding pass on the electronic boarding scanner. CISF staff will validate the documents and allow the passenger to enter.
At the check-in counter, the check-in agent scans the boarding pass and the passenger must leave the luggage at the counter. At immigration, the authorities verify the passport. In the security control area, the passenger places their carry-on luggage in the Automatic Tray Retrieval System (ATRS) and moves to the security control. Scan the boarding pass into an electronic boarding scanner and continue.
At the boarding gate, the passenger scans the boarding pass on an electronic boarding scanner and moves to the gates to board the plane, according to the official statement.
