One of the leading experts on aging, Dr. David Sinclair, said on Friday that there is a possibility that people could get a pill in the near future that could reverse aging. Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (HTLS), Dr. Sinclair spoke about the experiment conducted on older mice to improve their vision. He added that because of the way technology moves, the world could be given a pill to rejuvenate itself.
“I don’t have a crystal ball, but we are working to take epigenetic reprogramming technology (the experiment done in older mice) and treat the first glaucoma patient in the next two years to see if we can restore vision,” said the Dr. Sinclair when asked about the possibility of a pill appearing in the next two to three decades.
“There are at least 20 companies that are working on drugs that can delay, and perhaps reverse, aging. So if it doesn’t happen in the next 30 years, something must have gone terribly wrong, ”he added.
When asked about reusing epigenetic programming technology, Dr. Sinclair said there is a possibility that it could be done multiple times. “I think we can do it multiple times, there is no reason why it can’t be repeatedly. Imagine, we could find a pill that could do what we did with the eyes of the mice but with the whole body. We’ve already designed it to be ignited by a pickup. “
“We used a molecule in those mice, we gave it to them as a drink and it activated the genes. One day, maybe you can go to your doctor, get an injection or a pil for three weeks, and rejuvenate yourself: better memory, better eyesight, better healing, maybe even looking better. Ten years later, he comes back and takes another course of that drug, ”said the biologist.
Dr. Sinclair was featured on the cover of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. He is a professor in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and co-director of the Paul F Glenn Center for Biological Mechanisms of Aging.
This is the first time that HTLS has been carried out virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation. And in tune with the situation, ‘Defining a new era’ has been the chosen theme for this year. From politics to sports, from medicine to education to food, the summit has seen a wide range of opinions coming from experts in the respective fields on the post-pandemic world.
