Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and more.
Apple has started rolling out iOS 14 to eligible iPhones, and there are plenty of nifty features including widgets and an app library. However, the update also includes some useful tricks up its sleeve that you might not be aware of.
I’ve been using iOS 14 beta since it was announced in June at the Apple World Developers Conference (WWDC) and the after-touch is my favorite feature. It allows you to define actions when you tap two or three times on the back of your iPhone.
You can define many actions, including Switch applications, Home, Lock screen, Screenshot, Shake, Volume up or down, Magnifier, and Talk screen. If you can’t find an activity you want to assign, you can also create a Siri shortcut and assign it to double or triple tap.
This is how you can configure it:
- Go to Settings on your iPhone.
- Go to Accessibility> Touch and scroll down to Touch Back
- Define your actions in the Double Tap and Triple Tap options.
Note that the back touch feature will only work if you have an iPhone 8 or higher.
You are ready to go now. I set up double tap to add a Shazam track to my library via shortcut, and triple tap to take a screenshot. What would you do? Tell us about Twitter.
