The Supreme Court on Friday refused to file a petition to transport migrant workers, trapped in several states due to the national blockade required by the coronavirus outbreak, marching to their hometowns either by bicycle, walking, or hitchhiking.
“How can we stop it?” The bank, led by Judge L Nageswara Rao, said it is up to the states to take action. The higher court added that it cannot interfere based on newspaper clippings.
Attorney Alakh Alok Srivastava’s statement had pointed to the deaths of migrant workers in train and road accidents as they walked in an effort to return home.
On May 8, 16 migrant workers were crushed by a freight train in Maharashtra after they fell asleep on the tracks.
According to railway officials, the workers were walking to their home state, Madhya Pradesh, after they lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 blockade. Most of the public transport has already been canceled due to the blockade.
After persistent demands from the states, the Center allowed migrants to be sent back home and allowed the railways to operate special Shramik trains for them. However, many migrant workers continue to walk home.
