Police arrested one of the two accused men in Punjab’s Jalandhar who attacked a 15-year-old girl with a sharp weapon as they tried to snatch her phone. However, the girl had shown exemplary courage and fought off the attackers on Tuesday. The hunt for another accused has begun.

The girl, Kusum Kumari, a resident of Fatehpuri Mohalla, emerged as a hero shortly after her video of heroically confronting the attackers appeared on social media. Kumari was walking home when a bicycle slowed down near her and the passenger grabbed her hand and attacked her with a gun as she tried to snatch the phone from her. Kumari retaliated and managed to get her phone back.
While people on the internet expressed concern about the law and order situation, they also praised Kumari for putting up a strong fight.

Kumari, daughter of the Daily Wager, is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital for wounds to her wrist in the attack. Her father, Sadhu Ram, said that she would be discharged in three days.
Meanwhile, the police have identified the detained defendant as Avinash Kumar, 22, and he has been sent to police custody for three days, The Tribune reported. Avinash is the main defendant who tried to take the girl’s phone and attacked her with a weapon, wounding her wrist. He has been charged under Sections 307 (attempted murder) and 379 B of the IPC. The other defendant has been identified as Vinod Kumar and remains at large.
CCTV footage shows Kumari resisting the attack and grabbing the hand of the accused and pursuing him. After a short chase, she managed to grab him by the shirt and drag him off the bike. His act of bravery has been praised with Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar announcing that he will be submitting his name for the national and state level bravery awards. DC Ghanshyam Thori also announced a cash award of Rs 51,000 in recognition of his bravery.
