They’ve done their net run rate a huge favor by chasing the target within 13 overs and not losing a wicket. Now they are just one win away from making the playoffs. For CSK, the problems seem endless.
Advance: Chennai Super Kings face the Mumbai Indians in the 41st Indian Premier League match in Sharjah. The dismal performance of the Chennai franchise in the thirteenth edition of the IPL has continued and they languish at the bottom of the table with seven losses and three wins in 10 matches, still somehow staying alive in the tournament.
Just when fans had started to get some hope after CSK’s win over SRH in Dubai, it again collapsed with back-to-back losses, against DC and RR. It was their hitting that disappointed, as they were only able to post 125/5 against RR. It has been a major concern for them throughout the tournament.
They need a change, add some flamboyance to the batting order. It will be interesting to see if they appeal to the youngsters after MS Dhoni’s comments that they didn’t see as much spark in some of their young players. They desperately need a safe change … and the captain to lead from the front.
The Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, will be looking to get back on the winning track after the Super Over’s thrilling loss to the Kings XI Punjab.
Rohit Sharma will seek to achieve greater consistency with the bat, while the middle order will need to intensify after the defeat against KXIP. Maybe they need to promote Kieron Pollard in the order. He’s been in brilliant hitting form. Hardik Pandya has not found his rhythm, but such is the nature of his work where he must attack from the get-go.
It will also be interesting to see if James Pattinson comes back to the flank in place of Nathan Coulter-Nile, who hasn’t done too badly on the opportunities he has.
Jasprit Bumrah will once again be the biggest threat to CSK, while Trent Boult would look to bounce back after receiving 48 runs of 4 overs against KXIP. Bowlers would seek to prevail in the struggling CSK batting lineup. A win over CSK would allow MI to take first place in the league table.
