NEW DELHI : The first look at the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut regional rapid transit system (RRTS) was unveiled on Friday by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in the national capital.
The 82 km long RRTS Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut will be the first of its kind in India with a design speed of 180 km / h. The prototype is reportedly scheduled to roll off the production line after two years in 2022.
Presenting the first look at India’s first RRTS train today, the MoHUA secretary said that green and energy efficient trains will improve the quality of life in and around NCR by accelerating economic growth. The project will also create economic opportunities by reducing air pollution, carbon footprint, congestion, and accidents.
NCRTC Managing Director Vinay Kumar Singh, all members of the NCRTC Board of Directors and other senior officials from MoHUA, NCRTC and Bombardier India were also present at today’s event.
RRTS trains will be light, air-conditioned
With a radiant stainless steel outer body, these aerodynamic RRTS trains will be lightweight and air-conditioned. Each car will have six plug-in automatic wide doors, three on each side (business class will have four such doors, two on each side) for easy on and off.
RRTS trains will have 2×2 transverse seats with adequate legroom, optimized aisle width with handles and grab posts for a comfortable ride for standing passengers, top rack, mobile / laptop charging sockets and Wi-Fi on board, among other passenger-centric features. .
New Delhi’s iconic Lotus Temple is an epitome of sustainability, as its design allows the flow of natural light sources and air circulation.
On similar lines, the RRTS rolling stock will have lighting and temperature control systems to improve the passenger experience with lower energy consumption. Equipped with modern conveniences, the RRTS rolling stock will be a unique fusion of new age technology and the rich heritage of India.
Speaking at the event, Vinay Kumar Singh said: “The rolling stock of India’s first RRTS has been designed with a vision to meet the aspirations of New India. The RRTS rolling stock will be energy efficient with approximately 30% regeneration during braking. NCRTC has awarded the rolling stock work comprehensive long-term maintenance built in by the manufacturer, thus leveraging the benefits of life cycle costing. I am confident that RRTS will prove to be the transportation backbone for the people of NCR and define a new benchmark in the transportation sector that will enable the overall growth of the region. “
Corridor to reduce travel time between Delhi-Meerut
The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is one of three prioritized RRTS corridors being implemented in phase 1.
The 82 km long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is the first RRTS corridor to be implemented in India. The corridor will reduce the travel time between Delhi and Meerut by about 1/3. The travel time from Delhi to Meerut will be reduced to less than an hour from 3 to 4 hours by road today.
The priority section of the corridor is scheduled to enter service in 2023, while the entire corridor will be commissioned in 2025.
The other two RRTS corridors in Phase I are Delhi-Gurugram-SNB and Delhi-Panipat. Pre-construction activities are in full swing for the Delhi-Gurugram-SNB corridor and its DPR is under active consideration by the Government of India for sanction. The DPR of the RRTS corridor from Delhi to Panipat is also actively being considered by the respective state governments for approval.
NCRTC will acquire 30 sets of trains of 6 cars each to operate regional rail services throughout the corridor and 10 sets of trains of 3 cars each to operate local transit services in Meerut. All rolling stock for the RRTS Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor will be manufactured at Bombardier’s Savli plant in Gujarat.
An earlier report also said that there could be a change in the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS alignment as NCR Transport Corporation, the organization that is building the RRTS, has abandoned plans to build its depot in Madhuban-Bapudham after it failed. was able to reach an agreement with the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA).
