Mumbai:
Nair Hospital, a hospital dedicated to COVID-19 in central Mumbai, was flooded after heavy rains overnight in the state capital of Maharashtra, which has reported more than 45,000 coronavirus cases so far.
A video, which is widely shared on the Internet, shows knee-deep water in a section of the hospital where containers can be seen floating with health workers dressed in PPE standing in the background. No patient can be in the area that has been captured in this video.
The western suburbs of the city received around 150mm to 200mm of rain, according to the meteorological bureau, at a time when the country’s financial capital is battling the coronavirus, raising concerns about violation of the regulations of government-imposed social distancing.

Over the next 24 hours, the city is expected to receive more rainfall.
The Nair Hospital in Mumbai rain gauge has recorded 387 mm of rain in 18 hours, between 8 pm and 4 pm today. It has also recorded the highest rainfall in the city.
The meteorological department has warned of a situation similar to a flood in the low areas. Heavy rains have affected road and rail traffic and left various parts of the city flooded.
The Regional Meteorological Center, in a statement late at night, said that “people living in vulnerable places can be careful,” as it also warned of traffic disruptions and power outages.
The meteorological office also warned of “the possibility of danger to very old buildings and structures without maintenance.” Earlier this week, more than 30 people were killed in a building collapse in Bhiwandi, near Mumbai.
Maharashtra remains the worst pandemic-affected state in the country with 12.42 lakh cases. India’s Covid account passed the 56 lakh mark this morning.
