Hyderabad:
Days after torrential rains flooded much of the city, killing at least 50 people and causing billions of rupees in damage, several areas in Hyderabad received heavy rains on Saturday night, causing traffic jams and waterlogging.
Some areas received more than 150mm of rain during the day, slightly less than the 190mm reported Tuesday. Videos shared on social media showed streets flooded with more than 2 feet of water.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Disaster Response Force (DRF) personnel were continuously working to eliminate waterlogging and all possible measures were being taken, said Vishwajit Kampati, Director of Disaster Monitoring and Management at GHMC. , in a tweet.
The meteorological bureau in Hyderabad said light to moderate showers or thunderstorms are highly likely in some parts of the city on Sunday, while one or two locations may see heavy episodes.
The state government said on Thursday that 50 people had lost their lives due to heavy rains and flash floods and initial estimates showed losses of around 6 billion rupees.
Authorities have been carrying out relief operations in the areas affected by the rain, even when some towns, close to bodies of water, remained under water.
Army personnel and the National Disaster Response Force were deployed to evacuate the stranded residents.
Telangana state is the worst affected area, but the floods have also affected neighboring Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao said on Saturday that families affected by the floods will be identified and ration kits will be delivered to their doorstep.
Each kit, which costs Rs 2,800, will contain one-month ration items and three blankets, according to a government statement.
