‘Heartbroken over loss of life,’ Prime Minister Modi tweets about Ahmedabad fire in which 9 died


Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed his condolences after a fall caught fire in Ahmedabad and said authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected.

Distressed by the loss of life due to a fire in a subsidence in Ahmedabad. Condolences to grieving families. Prayers with the injured. The authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected, ”Modi tweeted.

The death toll due to the explosion has risen to nine.

Earlier, authorities said Wednesday that six people were killed and eight others injured when a part of a boat storing chemicals collapsed after an energy blast ripped through it, according to the PTI news agency.

So far, at least 14 people have been pulled from the rubble and the rescue operation is continuing, a senior fire official said, adding that the building housing the pothole was located on Pirana-Piplaj Road, which is an industrial area.

Fire Chief MF Dastur said fire crews rushed to the scene upon learning of the explosion.

Dastur added that the 14 were transferred to the LG Hospital in ‘108’ ambulances and machinery was used to break the concrete slabs and remove them.

Meanwhile, the government hospital said that six of the total number of people admitted were declared “dead” or died shortly after admission.

“The eight remaining wounded are in treatment,” he said in a statement.

Deputy Police Commissioner (DCP) Ashok Munia stated that an investigation was ordered into this incident.

“The chemical depot building collapsed after an explosion. The rescue operation is still underway. We have started an investigation into this incident, ”Munia added.
