He will take BJP, his allies to court over “unconstitutional” farm laws: Amarinder | India News

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Prime Minister Amarinder Singh said on Sunday that his government would take the BJP and its allies, including the Akalis, to court over new “unconstitutional, undemocratic and anti-migrant” laws from the central government.

He said he would fight to his last breath to protect the interests of farmers in the state.

“We will move the court and fight against the draconian legislation as soon as they get the presidential approval and become the law of the land,” he said.

Singh expressed shock at the way the BJP-led Union government “brutally forced” the agriculture bills through the Rajya Sabha.

The CM questioned the rationale behind the “controversial and vicious” bills, which, it said, were a “flagrant invasion” of the powers of the state and the control of the agricultural sector, to express its vote, despite the strong opposition reservations and inappropriate numbers in the house.

Why didn’t the House opt for split votes on this critical issue, which has even split the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), he asked.

He said his government will not allow the central government, of which the SAD “shamelessly” remains a part, “trample” the rights and interests of farmers through these “cruel” legislation designed to “destroy” the farming community, and State of Punjab for which agriculture is its livelihood.

“We support farmers and we will do whatever it takes to protect their interests,” he said in a statement here.

“They (BJP and their allies) clearly don’t care what these laws do to farmers,” he said, flaying the BJP-led government for “selling” farmers’ interests to big corporations.

Amid the uproar from the opposition, Rajya Sabha on Sunday passed the Agricultural Products Trade and Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill 2020, and the Farmers’ Agricultural Services and Price Guarantee Agreement (Empowerment and Protection). 2020.

They were passed through Lok Sabha on Thursday. A third bill has yet to be passed in Rajya Sabha.
