Hathras woman dies, fighting for her life after gang rape


The 19-year-old Dalit woman, who was gang-raped in Hathras of Uttar Pradesh, died Tuesday morning, the ANI news agency reported.

The woman was allegedly raped by four men in her village on September 14 when she was going to a farm.

She was taken to a hospital in Aligarh the next day in critical condition and transferred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi in search of better medical facilities. The woman was in critical condition and on a ventilator.

According to police, the woman had gone to the countryside with her mother on the fateful day and disappeared shortly after. She was later found brutally injured, with deep cuts on her tongue. The defendant also tried to strangle her.

Subsequently, the police arrested the four defendants. The Kotwali in charge at Hathras was dismissed and sent to the police lines. The Provincial Armed Police (PAC) was deployed in the woman’s house.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chairman Mayawati condemned the incident, saying that no woman from any community is safe in Uttar Pradesh and asked the state government to heed it.
