A 19-year-old Dalit woman from Uttar Pradesh succumbed to injuries in a New Delhi hospital after she was allegedly grabbed by four upper caste men on 14 September in the Hathras district.

The victim was initially admitted to a district hospital 15 days ago with a severed tongue and severely injured spinal cord, among other serious injuries. She was later transferred to Aligarh Hospital for treatment, before moving to Safdarjung Hospital in the national capital. Police said the victim had been dragged into a field and trapped in a ganglion. They had also strangled her with her dupatta.

Four upper caste men from the women’s village in Hathras district, who were charged with gangrape and attempted murder, in addition to the SC / ST (Prevention of Atrocity) charges, they have been arrested.

They were detained based on a statement provided by the victim on September 23, when he briefly regained consciousness. She had accused three men, Sandeep, her uncle Ravi (35) and her friend Luv Kush, of committing the crime.

The victim’s mother, who had accompanied her to a nearby field to cut grass for her cows before the incident occurred, had said The Indian Express, “I was sitting 100 meters from her. I could have saved him. I wish I didn’t have hearing problems. “

The family alleged that the main defendant, Sandeep, and his family “had always harassed Dalits in their area.” Nearly two decades ago, Sandeep’s grandfather had been booked under the SC / ST Act and served three months in prison for allegedly beating the victim’s grandfather for a petty matter.

The victim’s brother said that the 19-year-old incident had left a grudge between families, “but nothing ever happened.” “They are upper castes and they have always insulted us. We ignore them. Sandeep is an alcoholic who harasses women, but no one ever files a complaint, “he said.
