AGRA: 19-year-old Dalit gang rape victim from Hathras succumbed to injuries at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on Tuesday morning. She was referred from the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of Aligarh to Delhi a day earlier.
Confirming this, the victim’s brother told TOI that they obtained the information about his death at 6 am. “We want justice for her. The accused should not be forgiven. They must be hanged, ”he said.
The Dalit girl was allegedly raped by four men from the dominant caste in her village on 14 September. She was left paralyzed with a severe spinal cord injury that doctors say could have sustained permanent damage.
The girl was dragged by dupatta around her neck to a field where she was allegedly raped. She was gathering fodder when the suspects attacked her. Her spinal cord was damaged and her tongue, which apparently got caught between her teeth, was cut off. The fact that she was allegedly raped was only revealed when she was able to give a statement to the police, a week after her hospitalization.
The four defendants he named, Sandip, Ramu, Lavkush and Ravi, have been arrested for gang rape, attempted murder and sections of the SC / ST Act. Police were preparing to present the charge sheet.
Hathras Additional Police Superintendent Prakash Kumar said IPC section 302 (murder) will be added in the FIR after the gang rape victim’s death.
Compensation of Rs 4.12 lakh has been awarded to the victim’s family and the remaining amount will be given once the charges are proven. “The body of the victim will be brought to his village after the autopsy,” he said.
(The identity of the victim has not been disclosed to protect her privacy per Supreme Court directives in cases involving sexual assault)
