Hathras Fallout: Yogi Orders Women’s Help Desk at Every UP Police Station


Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered the installation of a women’s help desk at every state police station, while reiterating that the state government was committed to the safety and honor of women.

Following the prime minister’s directive, the UP government decided to establish help desks for women as of October 17, coinciding with the launch of the Mission Shakti campaign to empower women and sensitize citizens about women’s safety. and girls.

Female police personnel will be deployed to these help desks to record women’s complaints and assist them.

Chairing a Covid-19 and Unlock 5 review meeting, the prime minister said that the Mission Shakti campaign would launch on ‘Sharadiya Navratri’ starting on October 17 and continue until ‘Basantik Navratri’ (in April 2021), which will cover a period of approximately six months.

The women and girls would be educated on self-defense techniques during the campaign, he said. He also said that all district magistrates must effectively implement and monitor the Shakti Mission.

Yogi has also ordered senior police officials to personally visit the scene of the crime against women and children, reported in the state, and to guarantee an investigation with a time limit. The series of measures announced for better prevention of crime against women follows a national outrage against the state police’s handling of the Hathras gang rape case.

A host of programs on the safety and empowerment of women will be organized in gram panchayats, schools, universities and government offices, as well as elsewhere.

Up to 23 departments will participate in these programs, including those of basic education, secondary education, higher education and MSMEs, as well as governmental and non-governmental agencies. Private taxi operators will also be sensitized about the need for women’s safety.

The state government had previously installed pink cabins and arranged to leave single women safely at home at night.
