NEW DELHI: UP Police needed to be “more sensitive and responsible” as their actions sparked anger among people after the cremation of the woman Hathras Dalit in the middle of the night, head of the parliamentary panel on the welfare of the SC / ST and the MP of the BJP Kirit Solanki he said Thursday.
Calling the Hathras case “Unfortunate,” said Solanki who strongly condemns the incident and that the guilty must be hanged if the rape charge is proven.
“Severe punishment must be given to those found guilty of this heinous crime. And if gang rape is proven, they must be hanged according to the law,” Solanki told PTI by phone.
Solanki, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Welfare of the List Castes and Tribes, said: “The panel will take this incident seriously and will discuss with panel members how to address this issue.”
However, a senior UP Police officer said the forensic report revealed that the 19-year-old was not raped.

Solanki, a Dalit leader, is a MP from Ahmedabad (west) and has been elected to Parliament three times.
Similar sentiments were echoed by another Dalit deputy of the ruling BJP. Hans Raj Hans, who demanded that the Uttar Pradesh government of his party led by Yogi Adityanath must crack down on officials responsible for the hasty cremation of Hathras’s victim.
Some relatives of the victim had alleged that the cremation was done by force in the middle of the night, despite their objections and their requests to take the body home for some rituals were rejected.
In a letter written to the Prime Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Adityanath, Hans requested that his government ensure that justice is served for the victim and that no one dares to commit such an act in the future.
The Dalit woman was allegedly raped by four upper caste men in Hathras on September 14 and was referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on September 28 with spinal cord injuries, paralysis and cuts to her tongue. She died around 3 am the next day.
Since the alleged rape case came to light, the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has come under fire from the opposition. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were arrested and prevented from visiting Hathras that same day.
