Hathras:
The main defendant in the alleged gang rape and torture of a young Dalit in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, has written to the Uttar Pradesh police, stating that he and the three other defendants are being framed in the case and seeking “justice” for the four men. . He also accused the woman’s mother and brother of torturing her.
The letter has emerged amid police claims that there is evidence that the victim’s family knew one of the defendants.
Sandeep Thakur, who is in jail along with the other three, has written a letter to the police in Hathras, claiming that he and the 20-year-old woman were “friends”. “Apart from the meeting, we used to talk on the phone from time to time,” he wrote in the handwritten letter in Hindi on Wednesday. The letter has the thumbprints of the four defendants.
UP police had claimed that call records reveal that the woman’s brother was in contact with Sandeep Thakur. 104 calls were made between the brother and Sandeep Thakur from October last year to March, according to police.
Sandeep Thakur, in his letter, claimed that his family did not like his friendship. “On the day of the incident, I had gone to meet her in the fields that day where her mother and brothers were also present. I returned home after she asked me. Then I started feeding the cattle,” he said.
“Later I learned from the villagers that her mother and brothers beat her for our friendship, seriously injuring her. I never beat her or did anything wrong to her. Her mother and brothers falsely accused me and three others and sent us to jail. We are all innocent. I ask you to investigate and do us justice, “he said.
A senior official at Aligarh prison, where the defendants are held, confirmed that the defendants wrote a letter to the Hathras police. “They sent their letter to the Hathras Police Superintendent last night. In accordance with the law, we have sent the Hathras Police Superintendent … They have submitted their version. Now the investigating agencies will see,” Alok Singh, Senior Superintendent from Aligarh jail, he told reporters today.
The victim’s father has denied the allegations made by the defendants. “I lost my daughter. Now they are trying to defame us. We are not afraid. The accusations are totally false. We do not need any compensation or money. We want justice,” the woman’s father told NDTV.
The woman was assaulted by four upper caste men from her village on September 14. He died last Tuesday of horrible injuries from the attack; He had multiple fractures, spinal injuries, a broken neck, and a cut on his tongue.
Congressional leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra condemned the new allegations and theories that have emerged. “Creating a narrative that defames a woman’s character and holding her responsible in some way for the crimes committed against her is disgusting and regressive,” he tweeted, adding that women deserve “justice, not slander.”
On Wednesday, a Special Investigation Team or SIT, created by the Yogi Adityanath government, was given 10 more days to deliver its findings. The three-member team questioned the woman’s brother. “We have no contact with them. We only have one phone in the house. If the police have the audio of the calls, they should produce them,” he said.
