In what appears to be a dishonorable murder case, a woman and her future husband, both from the Jat community but from different villages in the Rohtak district of Haryana, were allegedly shot dead by their uncle, who disapproved of their relationship. .
Pooja, 27, and Rohit, 25, were killed in the shooting, police said. Rohit’s brother, Mohit, who was also injured, is in treatment at the Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) and is said to be stable.
They were attacked in a busy market near Delhi’s ring road on Wednesday, as the families of Puja and Rohit were heading to court to solemnize the marriage, police said.
According to Rohit’s mother, Puja’s uncle Kuldeep had previously disapproved of the love match, but later agreed to give his blessings to the young couple.
“He (Kuldeep) used it as a pretext to meet with us before going to court. He escaped after shooting at the vehicle in which my family was traveling, including Puja,” he said.
“Pooja was an orphan and was raised by her uncle Kuldeep, a property merchant. She had been staying in Rohtak for the past few months and had developed a relationship with Rohit. According to the complaint, Kuldeep had called Rohit’s relatives to court to her marriage. Later, she asked the groom’s relatives to come over to Maharshi Dayanand University because they wanted to talk about something before the marriage. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sajan Singh said the woman’s uncle, Kuldeep Singh, her son Kapil Kumar and three other people were arrested over Rohit’s father’s complaint. A case has been filed against him under articles 302 (murder), 34 (acts carried out by several people to promote a common intention) of the IPC and article 25 of the Arms Law.
Police have recovered two empty casings from the scene and a forensic team has collected evidence.
