CHANDIGARH: Haryana Police fired tear gas canisters on Sunday night to thwart a march by a group of agitators farmers towards Delhi in the Masani bombing of the Rewari district.
The farmers first broke through the police barricades erected near the village of Bhudla Sangwari and then began to move towards Delhi at night.
They have been camping in the service lane of the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway for the past few days, police said.
When the group of farmers reached the Masani flood where the barricades were erected, the police used tear gas to disperse them.
“We have detained (the farmers) in Masani,” Rewari Police Superintendent Abhishek Jorwal said by phone.
On December 31, a group of farmers broke through police barricades in the Shahjahanpur border with Rajasthan, trying to advance towards the national capital.
The police had also resorted to tear gas bombardment and the use of water cannons to arrest them.
Large numbers of farmers from Rajasthan, Haryana and some other places have been protesting on the Jaipur-Delhi highway for the past few days, demanding the repeal of the new agricultural laws.
They have been camping at the Rajasthan-Haryana border crossing after police prevented them from moving towards Delhi as part of their “Delhi Chalo” march against the new agricultural laws.
