The motion of no confidence filed by Congress against the Bharatiya Janata Party-Jannayak Janta Party coalition government in Haryana on Wednesday was defeated by 55 votes to 32. Legislators voted along party lines with two independents: Meham MLA Balraj Kundu and Dadri MLA Sombir Sangwan – supporting the vote of no confidence.
In the 90-member assembly, the BJP and JJP have 40 and 10 MLA respectively, in addition to the support of five Independents. Lone Haryana Janhit Party MLA Gopal Kanda, representing Sirsa, also voted in favor of the government. Congress has 30 MLAs. Two Assembly seats in Ellenabad and Kalka had become vacant earlier this year.
Moving the no-confidence motion against the government led by Manohar Lal Khattar, opposition leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that the coalition government had completely lost the confidence of the people and that its representatives could not even go to their own constituencies. and villages. He accused the government of breaking the electrical connection of farmers agitating on the Delhi border and denying them access to toilets.
Hooda said both parties in government had promised a minimum price of support to farmers in their manifestos, but forgot it after coming to power. He also raised the issue of unemployment, the deterioration of the public order situation and the increase in drug abuse cases in the state.
Hooda, however, said that he will not speak about the three agricultural laws as they were outside the purview of the Assembly and have already stayed in the Supreme Court.
Opposing the motion, JJP leader and senior deputy minister Dushyant Chautala said that “the BJP was the natural ally of his party.”
Mr. Khattar, in his response, said that the Congress party had a culture of “lack of trust.” He confronted factionalism in the opposition party saying that they did not trust even their own leaders. The Chief Minister reiterated that the three agricultural laws were “optional” and that the MSP and the mandi system would continue. Mr. Lal said an estimated loss of ₹ 8,000 crore was caused to the industry and the public purse due to the ongoing turmoil by farmers until February 9.
Accusing the Opposition of playing politics and provoking the farmers, Mr. Lal said he was in favor of the resumption of the dialogue and an early resolution of the farmers’ agitation.
