The cost of operating the buses has increased from Rs 37.48 per km in June 2016 to Rs 52.23 per km in December 2019, he said. Haryana Roadways has a fleet of around 4,294 buses and operates around 10.38 lakh km daily.

Public transportation is off the roads due to a national blockade to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

The bus increase is well below the 25 percent increase made in 2010-11 and the 20 percent increase in 2012-13, according to the statement.

In another decision, the cabinet granted approval to partially reinstate VAT on diesel and gasoline prices and decided to completely ban the purchase of new vehicles, including cars and jeeps, except buses for public transportation and vehicles used for response from emergency during current year
