Despite being polar opposites, Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna’s marriage has been rock solid for nearly two decades. If he is a diplomat, she is famous for her unfettered style. He is a fitness enthusiast who loves outdoor activities, while she prefers to snuggle with a good book. However, their differences only make them stronger.
When Akshay turns 53 on Wednesday, here are some lesser known facts about her marriage to Twinkle:
1. When Twinkle ‘assaulted’ Akshay
In 2009, a case was brought against Akshay and Twinkle for allegedly engaging in obscenity in public during Lakme Fashion Week. On Koffee With Karan, she revealed the story behind the case and how she is still out on Rs 500 bail.
Twinkle said that Akshay invited her to the fashion show and just before the show started she got a call saying that he would stop in front of her and that she would have to unbutton his jeans. Despite her refusal, he kept going.
Akshay and Twinkle were at Rashtrapati Bhavan the next day, where he was receiving the Padma Shri, when he received a message from his mother that the police were looking for her and there was a warrant for her arrest.
Twinkle explained how Akshay got out and why his name is still associated with the case. “We have the same lawyer and the lawyer said, ‘We have to get one of you out.’ So she filed a petition saying my client was standing there, this woman assaulted her and opened her button. I am out on bail of Rs 500. She’s on my Wikipedia page, arrested for an obscene crime, ”he laughed.
2. Akshay once forgot Twinkle’s birthday, so he made him buy him a huge diamond.
In Koffee With Karan, Twinkle revealed that when he was dating Akshay, he gave her a paperweight as a birthday present. “I had forgotten her birthday and then when I realized it was her birthday, there was no time to go shopping. The paperweight was in my house, so I wrapped it up quickly (laughs), ”he explained.
Twinkle wasn’t satisfied with the makeshift birthday present and made sure Akshay got his due. “He gave me a paperweight, so that day I said, ‘One day, I’ll make sure you buy me a diamond as big as this paperweight!’ So I made sure, ”he said.
3. Akshay and Twinkle’s relationship started as an affair
Talking about how his love story with Akshay began, Twinkle revealed on Koffee With Karan that he had just gotten out of a long-term relationship and wanted to have an affair for the first time in his life. “There it was, two meters of chocolate ice cream. So, I decided that I was going to have an affair with her and that it would last for 15 days (the length of her outdoor schedule). That was my plan. I ran out of books in Calgary, there was no television and I was really bored. And there he was. It was perfect, ”he revealed.

4. Twinkle told Akshay that ‘he won’t have a second child if he doesn’t start making sensible movies’
When Akshay met Twinkle, he was reeling from 14 consecutive box office disasters. From that time to becoming the highest paid actor in Bollywood today, he has certainly come a long way. He credits his wife with bringing good luck into his life.
On Koffee With Karan, Akshay said that Twinkle changed a lot about him, including his approach to movies and his sensibilities as an actor. “I told him that I wouldn’t have a second child if he doesn’t start making sensible movies,” she revealed. He sighed playfully, “I can’t even tell you what I have to go through every day!”
Akshay and Twinkle have two children: a son named Aarav, born in 2002, and a daughter named Nitara, who was born in 2012.
5. Akshay found Twinkle’s list of pros and cons of marrying him on the second day of their marriage.
Twinkle has a pretty pragmatic approach to marriage. She said in Koffee With Karan that since the main reason for wanting to marry was procreation, one needed to be sure that the genetic strain was introduced into one’s family line. This is why she constantly asked Akshay about how her extended family was doing, as she wanted to know the illnesses that run in her family. She even made a genetic table.
Akshay revealed that she found this graphic on the second day of her marriage. Twinkle corrected him and said he found a different one, in which she had listed the pros and cons of marrying him. “I first got mad when I saw this graph. I got mad and then I realized, okay, this is what she means. It took me a bit of time to understand exactly what she meant. I’ve learned a lot from her, ”he said.
