Union Minister of Transport and Roads Nitin Gadkari has voiced his disgust at the “backward” work culture at the National Roads Authority of India (NHAI). Opening the new NHAI headquarters on Sunday, Gadkari mentioned how it took 12 years to complete the building and said it was time to show the exit door to the ‘non-performing assets’ that complicate and delay projects by creating obstacles.
In one video, Gadkari can be heard saying that photos of the people who delayed the construction of the building should be posted on the wall.
“It was a shame that the 250 million rupee project was completed in 2008, the tender was awarded in 2011 and its construction took another nine years. The president and current members have no relationship with him. But the great personalities like the CGMs and the GMs who worked on it from 2011 to 2020 and delayed the project, if possible, their photos should be placed in the building, so that people know its history. They delayed decisions for nine years, ”he said.
“We proudly say that we will complete the Delhi-Mumbai highway in two to three years. It is worth Rs 80,000 at 1 lakh crore. But it took many years to complete this 250 million rupee project. This is embarrassing, ”he added.
Gadkari further said: “We have not been able to identify performance bottlenecks. Many committees were formed, they gave their report. But these corrupt, inept and lazy people from NHAI are so powerful that despite orders, they make wrong decisions. “
