Patna:

Days after resigning as Bihar Police Chief Gupteshwar Pandey, who made headlines for his shocking “aukat (height) “comment on actor Rhea Chakraborty, met with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today. He is likely to join Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United soon and participate in next month’s Assembly elections.

In the footage after his meeting with the Chief Minister, Pandey is harassed by reporters demanding to know if he had discussed joining the party and if he was ready to fight at the polls from his hometown of Buxar.

To questions from reporters, Pandey said that he had only come to meet Nitish Kumar to thank him for his support. “There was no discussion about joining the party,” Pandey said, adding: “If there is any announcement about it, I will let you know.”

On Wednesday, Pandey, who resigned last week, told NDTV there was nothing wrong with his entry into politics. “What is the harm if I join politics? Is it unconstitutional, unethical, or illegal?” he had asked.

“I am the DGP of the people. Jantaka DGP. the janta de Buxar will decide what my next step should be, if they want me to join politics or not … I am a child of the earth. I have served 34 districts, “he said.

The former police officer is known to have political ambitions; in 2009 he unsuccessfully disputed the national elections of the Buxar parliamentary constituency.

Pandey, who also claimed to be known for his “impartial police work”, has been a strong supporter of Nitish Kumar and has been at the forefront of the Sushant Rajput case, taking it all the way to the Supreme Court.

In a controversial statement that followed the court’s order in August that the IWC will investigate the circumstances behind the Rajput’s death, it lashed out at Ms Chakraborty for suggesting that politics played a role in the Bihar government to push a CBI investigation.

“Rhea Chakraborty doesn’t have the aukat to comment on Bihar’s chief minister … “Mr. Pandey stated after the court ruling. His remarks about Nitish Kumar as an unjust target were seen as unusually political for a serving police officer.

Ms. Chakraborty, who has denied allegations by the Rajput family that she played a role in his death, is currently in Mumbai Byculla Jail after being arrested by the Narcotics Bureau.

Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case has become an emotional issue in Bihar.

Earlier this month, the BJP “Kala Sanskriti Manch” cultural cell put up posters of Mr. Rajput, whose hometown is Patna, with the message “na bhoole hain, na bhulne denge (We have not forgotten and we will not let anyone forget) ”, provoking strong protests from the opposition.

The posters were seen as underscoring the role of the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government in pushing forward a CBI investigation into the Rajput’s death and “ensuring that a promising young son of the state” gets justice.
