The State Elections Commission in its statement on Monday said that an average voter turnout of 46.1 percent was recorded in elections to six municipal corporations, with 52.83 lakh of the 1.41 crore of registered voters exercising their right. to vote on Sunday. During the 2015 polls of these six civic organizations, 45.81 percent of the electorate had cast their vote, according to the statement.

According to final figures shared by the SEC, Ahmedabad had the lowest share of 42.5 percent, while Jamnagar recorded the highest share of 53.4 percent. Additionally, Rajkot recorded 50.7 percent of polls, Bhavnagar-49.5 percent, Vadodara-47.8 percent, and Surat-47.1 percent.

The main contest is between the BJP, which has governed the six corporations for the last few terms, and the main Congress of the Opposition. During the election campaign, the BJP played the card of “development”, while Congress, which has been out of power in these local bodies for a long time, cited the “lack of amenities” and the recent increase in the price of fuel for change course. tide.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has claimed it would be an effective alternative to the BJP and Congress, while Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is making its debut in local body polls, having submitted 21 candidates in six neighborhoods of Ahmedabad.
