Gujarat’s Chief Minister Vijay Rupani tested positive for coronavirus, hours after he passed out on stage during an election rally in Vadodra, and was flown to Ahmedabad to be admitted to hospital. You have mild symptoms. Two other BJP leaders in the state, Bhikhubhai Dalsaniya and MP Vinod Chavda, have contracted the virus, said BJP Gujarat chief CR Paatil.
Last night, Rupani, 64, was on his way to a rally for the upcoming civic elections when he suddenly passed out on stage; A short time later, he received first aid and was then flown to Ahmedabad by helicopter, the PTI news agency reported.
“He passed out on stage and I gave him primary medical treatment. He was fine and returned to his car from the stage,” Vadodara BJP boss Dr. Vijay Shah was quoted as saying by PTI.
In Ahmedabad, he was admitted to UN Mehta Hospital. His sample for Covid was collected Sunday night and submitted for an RT-PCR test that came back positive for coronavirus, a health bulletin issued by the hospital said.
“His (Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani) condition is stable. All his medical check-up reports including EGC and CT are normal. There is nothing to worry about,” said Dr RK Patel, Director of UN Mehta Hospital, Ahmedabad, said by the ANI news agency today.
Six municipal corporations in Gujarat, including Vadodara, will hold elections on February 21, while elections for municipalities, districts and taluka panchayats will be held on February 28.
The chief minister “did not feel well for the past two days, but instead of canceling his public meetings held in Jamnagar on Saturday and in Vadodara on Sunday, he preferred to continue,” BJP leader Bharat Danger told reporters on Sunday, PTI reported.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked about his health by phone.
India has recorded more than 1.09 crore of coronavirus cases since the first patient was reported in Kerala on January 30, 2020. Gujarat has only recorded around 2.65 lakh of cases. In recent months, however, the country and state have seen a drop in cases.
Several of the BJP’s top leaders, including the Union Interior Minister Amit Shah, have contracted the highly infectious virus in the past year.
