In an attempt to provide a public Wi-Fi service, the Union Cabinet decided on Wednesday to launch a PM-Wi-Fi access network interface to unleash a massive WIFI network in India. With this, public data centers will be opened across the country, says Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
“There will be no license, fee or registration for it,” said Ravi Shankar Prasad.
The Wi-Fi public access network interface will be known as PM-WANI, Information Technology (IT) Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced.
The Union minister also said that the proposal will promote the growth of public Wi-Fi networks in the country.
Prasad also said that companies can hire services from Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio or any Internet Service Provider (ISP) and use their physical location to provide Wi-Fi to anyone nearby.
In an official statement, he said: “The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval to the DoT proposal for the creation of public Wi-Fi networks by public data office aggregators (PDOA ) to provide public Wi-Fi – Fi service through Public Data Offices (PDOs) spread throughout the country to accelerate the proliferation of broadband Internet services through the public Wi-Fi network in the country “.
The proliferation of public Wi-Fi will not only create jobs, but also improve disposable income in the hands of small and medium-sized entrepreneurs and boost the country’s GDP, the statement added.
features:
The public Wi-Fi access network interface will be known as PM-WANI. The PM-WANI ecosystem will be operated by different players as described in this document under
Public data office (PDO): Will establish, maintain and operate only WANI compliant Wi-Fi access points and provide broadband services to subscribers.
Public Data Office Aggregator (PDOA): It will be a PDO aggregator and will perform the functions related to Authorization and Accounting.
Application provider: You will develop an application to register users and discover WANI compatible Wi-Fi access points in the nearby area and display the same within the application to access the Internet service.
Central register: Will keep the details of the application providers, PDOA and PDO. To begin with, the Central Registry will be maintained by C-DoT.
The Union Cabinet has also approved the provision of submarine fiber optic cable connectivity between the mainland (Kochi) and the Lakshadweep Islands.
“The cabinet approved the laying of a submarine fiber optic cable to 11 Lakshadweep islands to provide high-speed broadband Internet connectivity,” said Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar.
This would be in line with the one that was recently established in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Javadekar also said that the cabinet also approved the creation of 1 crore data centers.
The Cabinet has approved Atmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana at a cost of ₹Rs 1,584 crore for the current financial year and ₹Rs 22,810 crore for the entire Plan period, which is from 2020 to 2023. This Plan will benefit around 58.5 lakhs of employees.
