Earlier this year, on June 29, the government had blocked access to 59 mobile apps and a further 118 apps on September 2 under section 69A of the Information Technology Act. The move to ban the apps, of which the majority were Chinese, was called a digital attack on the neighboring nation with which India has been involved in a standoff along the Royal Line of Control (LAC) in the east. of Ladakh.

Previously, mobile applications such as TikTok, UC Browser, WeChat and Ludo were blocked by the government citing concerns that they are “ detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the defense of India, the security of the state and public order ” .

According to officials, previously banned apps were reported to be leaking data from Indian users. “Their bad practices have also been pointed out by experts. They have been said to take location data and transfer files to servers in China. Furthermore, beauty applications such as Beauty Plus and Selfie Camera have also been reported as a threat as they contain pornographic content, ”the official said in June. “Although most of these apps are of Chinese origin or controlled by Chinese companies, there are others based in Singapore and Hong Kong,” the official added.

The measure will also protect the interests of millions of Internet and mobile users in India. The decision is selective aimed at ensuring the security and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace, the IT ministry said after the app’s ban in September.
