Pune, December 29, 2020: While several countries have started to get vaccinated against the new Coronavirus (COVID-19), it seems that Indians will no longer have to wait.

Adar Poonawalla, Executive Director of the Serum Institute of India, gave this good news and reported that the use of the COVID vaccine, Covishield, will be allowed from January 2021.

Poonawalla said: “We have sent data from vaccine trials in the UK, including India, to the Central Medicines Controller concerned. We respect the rules of the Central Government. We take its efficacy and safety seriously before the vaccine hits the market. Serum and AstraZeneca do not want to take any risk in developing this Covishield vaccine. We will have to wait a few more days for that. We cannot compromise on the quality of the vaccine. The vaccine could be licensed in the UK in the next two to three days or in January. After that, vaccines from India can also be allowed. Therefore, there will be ‘good news’ in the new year. “
