Glenn Phillips 46-ball tonne record, helps New Zealand beat West Indies by 72 runs

New Zealand beat the West Indies in the second T20 – Glenn Phillips scored 46 tonnes of the ball: New Zealand showed a complete performance to defeat the West Indies by 72 runs in the second T20I of the three-game series on Sunday here at the Bay Oval.

Brief scores: New Zealand 238/3 (Glenn Phillips 108, Devon Conway 65 *, Oshane Thomas 1-44) defeated West Indies 166/9 (Kieron Pollard 28, Shimron Hetmyer 25, Kyle Jamieson 2-15) by 72 runs.

With this victory, New Zealand has gained an impregnable 2-0 lead in the three-game series. While batting first, New Zealand broke 238 runs in the twenty allotted overs, and then the bowlers didn’t let the West Indian batsmen settle into the fold.

Chasing 239, the West Indies got off to a bad start when the team lost its first two wickets with just 28 runs on the board. Andre Fletcher (20) and Brandon King (0) failed to leave a mark with bat in hand.

Shimron Hetmyer and Kyle Mayers joined a brief 32-race partnership, but James Neesham finished Mayers’ season (20) in the fold. In the next over, Mitchell Santner fired Nicholas Pooran (7), reducing Windies to 72/4.

Captain Kieron Pollard came to bat next, hitting a 28-run 15-ball snap shot. He even hit Santner for three straight sixes, however in trying to hit the fourth straight he lost his wicket and the West Indies was once again starring in the barrel.

No Windies batter was able to stay in the fold for long, and in the end New Zealand managed a 72-run win.

Previously, Glenn Phillips scored his first century T20I to propel New Zealand to 238/3 against the West Indies. Phillips played 108 runs in the game to lead New Zealand to its third-highest total of T20I. In addition, he completed the century with just 46 balls, the fastest T20I for a New Zealander.

After being asked to hit first, starters Martin Guptill and Tim Seifert gave New Zealand a brilliant start. They both hit the regular limits and formed a 49-run partnership before Oshane Thomas dropped Seifert (18) in the sixth over.

In the next over, Guptill (34) was also sent back to the pavilion when Devon Conway and Phillips took the field. The duo played some incredible shots, taking New Zealand above the 100-run mark in the eleventh second.

Phillips hit three straight sixes to Fabian Allen at 13 to complete his half century. Phillips and Conway proved too good for West Indian bowlers, who struggled to restrict batsmen from scoring runs. Continuing his brilliant form, Phillips managed to score his century while Conway turned up his 50 when New Zealand surpassed the 200-run mark.

Kieron Pollard fired Phillips in the final, but the damage was done when New Zealand set a highly competitive goal of 239 runs for the West Indies.
