‘Giving Gandhis a good note because …’: Azad on criticism of Congressional leadership

Congressional leader Ghulam Nabi Azad reiterated his demand for party reform on Sunday, saying there is no change in his demand for internal elections. He said these elections are necessary if Congress wants to become a national alternative.

“Congress is at its lowest level in 72 years. Congress does not even hold the position of Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha for the last two terms. But Congress won nine seats in the Ladakh hill council elections even when we did not expect such a positive result, “Azad said while speaking to the ANI news agency.

Speaking about the leadership of the party, Azad said: “So far, let’s change the way we function at all levels, things will not change. The leadership needs to give the party workers a program and hold elections for the posts. One should be so indispensable that the leadership asks you in your absence ”.

He added: “I am giving Gandhis a good grade due to the Covid-19 pandemic as they cannot do much at the moment. There are no changes in our demands. They have accepted most of our demands. Our leadership should hold elections if they want to become a national alternative and revive the party. “

Azad, along with 22 other leaders, had rebelled earlier this year on August 7 and sent a letter to the head of Congress, asking for a “visible”, “effective” and “full-time” leader; elections at all levels of the party; and establish an institutional leadership model to collectively guide the party, among other steps.

Four of the 23 leaders – Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mukul Wasnik, Anand Sharma and Jitin Prasada – were then members of the CWC party working committee. Other high-level leaders who signed the letter were Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tiwari, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and Prithviraj Chavan.

The letter had sparked a stormy and marathon session of the Congressional Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision-making body, followed by strong criticism of those who signed the letter, and the focus of the discussion was largely focused on measured in a timely manner. and its flight, more than its substance.
