New Delhi:

Ghulam Nabi Azad, leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha and veteran of Congress, tweeted on Friday that he has contracted the novel coronavirus and has been in home quarantine. He also advised those who had been in contact with him to follow COVID-19 security protocols.

“I have tested positive for COVID-19. I am in home quarantine. Those who have been in contact with me in the last few days can follow the protocol,” he wrote.

Previously, several other senior congressional leaders such as Ahmed Patel, Motilal Vora and Abhishek Singhvi had tested positive for COVID-19, the PTI news agency reported. While Singhvi has recovered, other leaders remain in treatment.

Several high-level politicians across the country have tested positive for the virus in recent weeks. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Patel all tested positive for the virus and had recovered.

Azad’s party colleague Anand Sharma wished him a speedy recovery.

“I am concerned that my friend and LOp in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad has tested positive for COVID. We wish him a good and speedy recovery,” he tweeted.

Azad had spearheaded the congressional attack on the Center’s farm laws last month. Amid the opposition boycott, he had met with President Ram Nath Kovind and demanded that he return the bills.

“The government should have consulted all the peasant parties and leaders before presenting the agricultural bills. We have given a representation to the president that the agricultural bills were passed unconstitutionally and that he should return them,” Azad said. .

India’s coronavirus count rose to 73.7 lakh of cases after a further increase of 63,371 COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours, government data showed this morning. The death toll stood at 1.12,161 after 895 deaths were recorded in one day.
